This paper seeks to emphasize the moral worth and ethical treatment of animals and to highlight the importance of their contribution to human existence and their impact on human life and literature, with examples of their influence in stories and fables found in English literature.
Animals play a crucial role in human welfare and progress. .They contribute to the emotional and physical wellbeing of humans by providing companionship and unconditional loyalty, besides being a stable source of food supply and contributing in a huge measure to the economy, and playing a very important role in military and rescue operations. Animals have made profound contributions in the scientific and medical field, particularly in medicine, and also through their therapeutic effect on patients (Friedman 1983, Anderson 1982) Almost every literature of every genre and age portrays animals whose presence enriches the stories by their symbolic roles and by the moral and ecological lessons they bring, affecting individuals, communities and societies (the Atlantic.com). For thousands of years there has been a profound and dynamic connection between humans and animals which is not just utilitarian but has affected the emotional, physical and psychological interactions between the two species. It goes beyond just basic utility and co-existence and involves the emotional, physical and psychological interactions which have impacted the wellbeing of both species effectively and in a positive manner.
